Yahoo's Local Area Service (Dave Ketchum Draft)

One, of many, Yahoo services is to start from a point on the map and provide nearby data, whether or not Internet access is involved. As of June 19, 1997, this included:

By locality name: Apalachin, Candor, Owego, Spencer, and Waverly in Tioga County.
By zip code: Apparently ALL zip codes.

Content includes:

White Pages: Yahoo's people finder, initialized for this location, to look up addresses, phone numbers, Email addresses from names, and names from phone numbers.
Yellow Pages: For dozens of categories, lists businesses, starting with the nearest (name, address, phone number - no Internet involvement here). When I tried New Autos from Owego, the list ended at Mansfield, PA - 47 miles away.
Internet directory references, under classifications such as Business and Organization.

Note that the Yellow Pages are not perfect. For example, Owego's Friendship Inn got listed as a hotel - it really is an adult day care center. ALSO, get help if the driving directions seem unreasonable - some could believably have been done by a drunken robot.
